Genesis Biopartner and Timișoara City Hall Pilot Project: Separate Collection of Biodegradable Organic Waste from Markets
Starting August 17, the biowaste generated at nine markets in Timișoara will follow a new, separate processing route: it is collected directly at the source, picked up separately by RETIM, and transported to Genesis Biopartner in Pișchia, where it is processed through anaerobic digestion. This process yields biogas, used to produce renewable energy, and digestate, a nutrient-rich organic fertilizer that can be used in agriculture. The pilot project aims to reduce the amount of biodegradable waste and test a recovery model that could later be scaled up locally.
RETIM Ecologic Service, together with the Timișoara City Hall, Piețe S.A., the Timiș Intermunicipal Waste Development Association (ADID), and Genesis Biopartner, is launching on August 17 a pilot project for the separate collection of biodegradable waste generated at nine markets: For one month, fruits and vegetables (including cooked ones), flowers, leaves, plants, and food products—such as fast food and baked goods—will be sorted directly by vendors into designated bins and transferred to the brown containers located in the markets. RETIM will ensure the separate collection and transport of these materials to the Genesis Biopartner facility in Pișchia.
Organic waste becomes a resource: In Pișchia, Genesis Biopartner has developed one of the most modern biogas facilities in Romania, where biodegradable waste is recycled.
